My Ramblings On

A big decision about flash.

For the last 3 years, I have been working with Flex at work. Spending most of my time in Flex/Flash builder, working on the "rich" part of our application. At the time, we believed Flex was the best approach for dealing with some of the pieces of our application.

This is tough, for many reasons:

I do not believe in Flash. I do not like Adobe. I love Rails, HTML5, CSS3, and other open standards. I have fallen behind in some areas of the Rails community, and have had to try and keep up through reading (or theoretical concepts), instead of hands on experience. These reasons are personal opinions, as well as a simple understanding of what I do/don't enjoy spending my time on. I don't believe Adobe Flash has much of a future (that I want to be a part of anyway), and the desire to transition to full time rails development has been strong for some time.

As time has passed, more and more of our application has transitioned out of flash and into pure HTML. We officially have 3 "pieces" left in flash, until last Tuesday. Last Tuesday, 8/30/2011, we decided to begin our final steps in replacing flash. The goal is to have it done by the end of the year, and I believe we will hit that goal.

I am so excited for this new venture, and I would like to end with this:

Farewell, Adobe.
